Cold water ice baths are the perfect way to help damaged muscles. When damage is done to muscles, tiny tears in the tissue called micro trauma occurs. The cold water stimulates the tissues, helps repair the muscles and strengthens them. The soreness attributed to muscles occurs within in 24-72 hours of the trauma.

Cold water immersion does not hurt the body. A person may feel cold, but afterwards they will feel their muscles relax. The cold water constricts the blood vessels inside the tissue, and allow for the flushing of waste products. The soreness of muscles occurs because of a buildup of lactic acid. Lactic acid appears from the glucose being broken down and oxidized into Pyruvate. Pyruvate is an acid ketone that helps in the metabolic process. Having an overabundance of lactic acid causes the soreness and creates tiny tears. Cold water immersion baths reduce swelling and tissue breakdown.
